People often class fifteen minutes of a branded sheet mask a form of Self-Care. From Red Wine to Tomato, sheet masks have vastly become popular within the Beauty Industry. It is estimated to generate an income of $392.1 M by 2026 after a breakthrough from South Korea's beauty industry.
As a consumer, our issue is the reflecting price now charged on a pack of five. It is hard not to steer away from the easy & convenience of a sheet mask when you lead a rushed lifestyle like many of us do today. You can also choose eight different types of sheet masks in fabrics alone varying from cotton, mud, cotton/microfibre, hydrogel, knit, bio-cellulose & non-woven. There are thousands of different benefits, scents or brands to choose from. It depends on your mood & aims from each benefit advertised on the packaging. No wonder we find it an obsession to try one whilst we get ready to leave or tidy the house on a Sunday afternoon. All are cosmetically blended with serums, dyes, parabens acids & natural ingredients. How many of the brands actually supply a source of natural elements?
Our main concern with sheet masks centres around the use we gain from them. As highlighted, it is a simple solution to a cost effective way of improving our skin when in a rush. We aren't aware of the dermatological impact it can have on our skin. A sheet mask was originally designed to compliment our skin routine. Our skin care routine should revolve around cleansing, UV blockages & moisturising. face mask is ideal for one cause but only provides a temporary boost. This is how the market became so profitable.
However, there are benefits of a sheet mask! It can be a great source for locking in moisture onto the face ensuring it is evenly distributed. We need to prioritise the ingredients that are clearly unhealthy for our skin, like glitter. Avoid using harsh chemicals & preservatives. Remove all make-up & cleanse the face before applying to avoid pore blockages. Lastly, take note of what your skin is asking from you. If you are about to breakout, find a face mask with Lavender or Tea Tree to help bring down the inflammation.
A natural face mask enables us to apply our full attention regarding ingredients, purpose & application. We are currently transitioning into a period of life where we regard everything like make-up as being obsolete because we now demand a slow living lifestyle without the hassle. Consumers have become smarter about which face mask brands are considered ecologically better for our skincare routine. We can't help but take a selfie with smashed avocado smothered on our face to look like Kendall Jenner. There is nothing satisfying like putting on a homemade face mask & winding down with a glass of wine or listening to good music whilst we relax.
Natural face masks are a low-cost maintenance form of self-care compared to sheet masks. Most face masks contain certain ingredients throughout that people reach for when purchasing or use when conducting their usual skin care routine. For example, hyaluronic acid can be naturally found in bone broth, Kale, Sweet Potatoes or Oranges. I wouldn't recommend putting acidic fruits on your face. Some do use Vitamin C serum as part of their skin care routine. It should just help you re-evaluate products being purchased in future. If you lack consuming a specific ingredient for the week, it would be best to then use it as part of your weekly routine. As consumers, we are led to believe mostly what has been scientifically proven to give results rather than a marketing lead product. Facial masks ultimately refine textures by hydrating our skin, removing wrinkles on an intimate level. When applying a face mask, you are spending time with yourself so whatever activity brings you joy that you wish to do when masking will release the serotonin.
